Tutoring Programs : SAT/ACT

Differentiated SAT Prep Instruction
We differentiate our SAT students by their ability level and offer relevant, focused instruction to meet their needs. While other companies throw everyone into one group, we provide accelerated instruction for advanced students, and appropriate instruction for our other students. This is EXTREMELY important if you want your child to achieve the highest SAT score increase possible!
Ongoing Assessment
Our students complete up to four practice tests, and we carefully analyze the results and respond to the analysis. This ensures that our curriculum is appropriately focused and that our students know exactly which concepts are their strengths and on which areas they need to concentrate.

Small SAT Prep Classes & Private Tutoring
Our SAT Prep sections have a maximum of six carefully matched students, who are led by one of our gifted, engaging SAT coaches.  All of our students complete an initial SAT assessment and then we organize students based on their results. In addition to six classes, we include three hours of one-on-one SAT tutoring and a variety of subject-specific workshops.

About Us : The Academy of 21st Century Learning

The Academy of 21st Century Learning is a team of educators specializing in science, mathematics, reading, writing, study skills, and the arts. We have worked together for many years at a local branch of a franchised learning center and have shared the joy of working with hundreds of children and adults. With the implementation of the new California Core Standards now established as basic requirements statewide, we recognized the need for a specialized educational platform and have joined our fields of expertise to meet these challenges.

The California Core Standards are based on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) educational foundation. They are robust and relevant to the real world and have been designed to prepare students for competition in the global economy. Through STEM, students develop the critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to keep pace with their most advanced international peers. In order for students to fulfill these new Standards successfully, innovative teaching strategies must be made available to them. Our team exemplifies these strategies and we have the knowledge and skills our young people need for success in college and careers. We have created the Academy of 21st Century Learning to provide our expertise for our California youth.

How do we do this? Our core programs and specialty classes are designed to encourage and support the growth of the whole child throughout the processes of self-development utilizing both cutting-edge technologies and the Socratic Method. Students become excited about learning because our programs are rich in academic skills, scientific discovery, visual arts, world culture, music, and language. We employ the teaching philosophy of achievement and success developed over decades of research by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck PhD. We reinforce children for their attempts, their hard work, and their tenacity, rather than getting the right answer. Teaching this growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the way students learn and in their decisions to master robust and relevant skills necessary in the real world.

Successful tomorrows start at the Academy!

STEM & Gifted Education

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classes are an interdisciplinary approach to learning which removes the traditional barriers separating the four disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math and integrates them into real world, rigorous and relevant learning experiences for students.
Students’ natural interests in science and engineering blossom through both real-world engineering design problems and hands-on inquiry. The activities and assessments promote higher-order, critical thinking skills that will result in improved student performance.

Tutoring Programs - Study Skills

The Academy is designed to support the growth of the whole child in the complex process of development. As our California curriculum becomes more and more enriched each child needs a higher and higher degree of competence and interest in the basic academic skills required for success.

How to study is equally as important as what is being studied.  Even our best and brightest can fail to achieve their ultimate potential if their study skills are lacking. These skills are relevant throughout our children’s lives in order for them to understand and retain all the different kinds of information that they will continue to encounter in our rapidly expanding world.

Study skills are an integral part of every student’s academic and life-long success. At The Academy, study skills are taught and practiced within the context of classes and programs taken both here and at school, with an emphasis on:

  • organizational skills
  • listening
  • note-taking and outlining
  • preparing for and taking tests
  • writing essays and reports

We recommend that study skills be taught through students’ regular subjects and not broken out as an independent course as it makes it much more convenient for the student and immediately  demonstrates why “this is important” to their success.

Tutoring Programs in Reading, Comprehension and Study Skills

Our program emphasizes the teaching of basic reading, comprehension, analysis, and study skills through the study of the social and physical sciences. This approach helps each child understand his or her role in society and in the relationships between groups and society. It also encourages them to explore the mysteries and beauty of the physical sciences and develops students’ ability to observe, notice detail, record, organize, and interpret information.

Writing is one of the most important skills for the 21st Century.  From the Common Core to getting into college, writing is used by every student in every subject.  We will help your child rise to the top by honing important writing skills from grammar to writing a dynamic five paragraph essay. Writing is viewed as a process and we integrate writing projects throughout our programs. Students are taught basic research skills and learn project management as a part of Language Arts component of study skills.  Communication skills are enhanced through oral reading, group discussions and brainstorming.
